Qualitative research on access to cash

This research aimed to address knowledge gaps related to access to cash for consumers, small and medium-sized business, and charities.  Key barriers to cash included: ATMs in poorly-served areas which are out of order or have run out of cash; limited access to free-to-use ATMs in some areas; limited availability of small denomination notes, particularly £5 notes which many ATMs do not dispense; security fears about the use of ATMs in areas of high crime or anti-social behaviour; and significant queues for ATMs in poorly-served areas, resulting in lengthy waits in some cases.  These barriers create significant financial costs for many consumers and many are forced to go without much needed cash.
